On Tuesday, June 20 over 170 people gathered in the Masonic Centre in Korumburra to participate in the Southern Gippsland Local Food Event. One of the event organisers, Meredith Freeman of Grow Lightly, said it was a celebration of the many successful and innovative food businesses across the whole of South Gippsland.
“We heard about all the great developments taking place in the many food enterprises – including horticulture, olive oil, milk, cheeses, community gardens meat and meat products, fruit, bread making, and so much more,” said Meredith.
Guest speaker Bruce Pascoe, author of “Dark Emu, Black Seeds” was a highlight of the event.
“An abundance of fresh local food was provided for morning tea and lunch, including homemade soup made from local organic produce, locally baked breads, locally made cheeses, locally grown fruit and wraps filled with locally grown salad, meat and cheese.
“It became clear that this was just the start of many more initiatives in local food. We could all envisage many enterprises, groups and individuals working together to build this important component of the South Gippsland economy and bring truly nutritious and tasty foods to all who live here.
“We really are working towards Southern Gippsland feeding Southern Gippsland.”

This event was initiated by Grow Lightly with support from the South Gippsland and Bass Coast shire councils, the Australian Government’s National Landcare Programme and the West Gippsland Catchment Management Authority.
